Artist of the Week - The Soulless Party - Exploring Radio Space

Love the tunes, love the cover, love it all.

This is where K. Oyston taps into our own intangible sense of nostalgia.

That tune.... it grabs... it tugs at the imagination... the brain asks "Is this memory or is this new?" We know this.

Goddammit we know this!

And yet it is new.... brand spanking new...

Unique, original, utterly transporting...

But it tugs...

It pulls...

And we know it.

We have always known it...

From those early years watching the flickering monochrome adventures in space, to those half remembered dreams and half forgotten memories, Oyston clambers into the space between memory and imagination and sits there waiting...

Ready to pounce...

Artist of the Week - The Soulless Party - "Tales from the Black Meadow" - Why you need to buy it

"Tales From the Black Meadow takes this idea one step further, providing an actual CD of music to accompany the stories. All but one track is named after one of the tales and the music of each complements its narrative counterpart. The slight scratchy crackle of the music effectively dates it, making it sound as though it could have been copied from a vinyl record from the '70s. ... atmospheric precision..."
Andrew Marshall - Starburst Magazine

"Listen to Tales From The Black Meadow and be introduced to the strange and wonderful world of Hammer Horror, of British Folklore, of Radiophonic Scores and things that go bump in the night. A delirious and delicious mystery…"
Forest Punk

"An irresistibly evocative title that no budding hauntologist could rightly ignore.."
The Active Listener

"Tales From The Black Meadow is one of the best releases we had this year, with ten marvellous compositions to state it.."
Music Blob (Blog)

"If you enjoy a bit of Folklore, Poetry, A Mystery on the moors, 1970s kids TV and some very lovely haunting music, then this book and CD are an absolute must.."
Keith Seatman - Test Transmission

When Professor R. Mullins of the University ofYork went missing in 1972 on the site of the areaknown as Black Meadow atop the North Yorkshire Moors,he left behind an extensive body of work that provided a greatinsight into the folklore of this mysterious place.
Mullins, a classics professor, had a great interestin Black Meadow, in particular its folklore andspent many years documenting its history andtales that were part of the local oral tradition. In his office, his colleagues found over twentythick notebooks crammed with stories andinterviews from the villages around BlackMeadow.

Some of these stories seemed to be fromthe legendary disappearing village itself andprovided some vital clues as to how thephenomena was interpreted and explained by thelocal populace.

In 1978, Radio 4 produced a now rare documentaryabout the folklore, mystery and tales surrounding the Black Meadow area.It also featured music specially commissioned to accompany the programme. This music has recently been unearthed by the Mullins Estate and carefully isolated for your listening pleasure.
These stories, poems and songs have also beengathered together to capture the unsettlingnature of the Black Meadow.

Do not listen to this on your own at night and makesure you shut your windows. Listen for thestamping feet of the horsemen, avoid the gaze ofthe Watcher in the village and do not walk into themist.

Artist of the Week - The Soulless Party - The first collaboration with Chris Lambert

Before "Tales from the Black Meadow" Chris Lambert and K. Oyston worked (via t'internet) on a couple of songs together. Like a latter day Vince Clark and Andy Bell (who apparently never meet when composing) the two traded backing tracks and vocal tracks back and forth and in this instance created a track celebrating the classic 70s slasher "Black Christmas". The result is freaky. It is part of a larger collection of Halloween songs penned by Chris Lambert.

Artist of the Week - The Soulless Party - Inspired by or...

The Soulless Party has been investigating the Black Meadow phenomena for many years now.

The unenlightened say that his work on the Black Meadow may have been influenced by some of his favourite films and pieces of music.

He has shared these below.

However, those in the know are aware that these films, stories and pieces of music are all influenced by Black Meadow itself. It only takes a bit of digging to find out the connections.

So can you see how Black Meadow folklore influenced the following?

It is worth checking out the concept of Time Slips...

Tales from the Black Meadow - The album sampler

Give yourself a flavour of "Tales from the Black Meadow" - the album that started it all. Without this Chris Lambert would not have started researching Roger Mullins' work at Fylingdales and putting together the fascinating work that is "Tales from the Black Meadow" the book.

Without "The Soulless Party" without K. Oyston there would be no Black Meadow. The place would be the obscure hidden mystery it always was.

Without K.Oyston and "The Soulless Party" there would be no "Songs from the Black Meadow".

It is fitting therefore that "The Soulless Party" have recorded a track especially for this album.

So give yourself a flavour and then... click here and buy it... enter the world of the Black MEadow that has terrified, disturbed and inspired so many...

Artist of the Week - Keith Seatman and Tales from the Black Meadow

A few years ago I heard Soulless Party’s Exploring Radio Space album. I really liked it and was very impressed with the Music inspired by Close encounters of the 3rd kind, which was another Soulless Party project.

So when I heard Tales from the Black Meadow for the 1st time I think I ordered a copy instantly.
I loved the whole atmosphere of the album…. plus the 2nd disc was fantastic, The Children of the Black Meadow being my favourite part. Recently went to visit a friend in North Devon and took Tales from the Black Meadow with me for the journey. It works very well for the A303 journey West.

In the summer of 2013 I got an invite to Reading Library for the book launch of Tales from the Black Meadow.

I persuaded a friend of mine to drive, since I have driven to Reading before and got lost; I thought my friend would do a better job than me. Alas he did not and we got lost. Arriving late I was very happy to see that we had in fact not missed any of the readings from the book. We met Kevin and Chris and I think I did that thing I do when I clam up and just grin, when meeting people for the 1st time. Jump to 2014 and I got an email from Kevin asking me to get in touch with Chris, I emailed Chris and he asked me if I would be interested in contributing a track to a forthcoming project Songs from the Black Meadow. I said yes without a doubt, and I got to work almost immediately.

My track on the album is called Playing Hop the Scotch (inspired by a line from The Coalman and the Creature) with so many talented and versatile musicians/artists on the album I feel honoured to have been asked to be part of the myth and mystery of The Black Meadow.
